I spotted this lone vending machine at Broadway Plaza in Walnut Creek between See’s Candies and Lucky Brand jeans. Not as ornate as this one but I bet it’ll be quite popular this summer.

350 Park St, Moraga
Back in March the Rheem Theatre in Moraga was voted best cinema in the Bay Area. Although I prefer stadium seating, the art deco styling of the Rheem and Orinda Theatre is incredible and help bring a certain substance to these otherwise staid suburban towns.
The US News & World has issued their latest Best High Schools report and as you can see in the above graphic Campolindo High School (#28) in Moraga has edged out Miramonte High School (#39) in Orinda, although Miramonte has a slightly higher “Academic Performance Index”. Coming in at #130 is Las Lomas in Walnut Creek, #177 Monte Vista in Danville, and #316 College Park High in Pleasant Hill. For some reason, Northgate High in Walnut Creek was not ranked despite having a higher “Academic Performance Index” and “College Readiness” score than College Park High.
I thought Danville would be on par with Lamorinda schools but it looks like that’s San Ramon instead. What do you think of these high school ratings? Note I didn’t check every city in Contra Costa so if I missed one please let me know.
Walking around I’ve noticed most fountains been turned off, even the world-renowned Fountain Head in downtown Walnut Creek. These days the cool weather doesn’t pose problems to lawns but as summer rolls around I’m wondering how people will cope with their gardens and conserve water in general. With twice a week watering rules in place, I have a feeling we’ll be seeing more brown lawns this summer. I’ve also noticed plenty of lawns being converted to drought tolerant gardens. What do you plan to do with your garden and lawn this summer?

Bike to Work Day is a promotional event to encourage the use of a bicycle instead of a car.
There will be over 300 Energizer Stations throughout the San Francisco Bay Area where cyclists can stop by for refreshments and promotional items. 511 Contra Costa has supported cyclists and Energizer Station hosts throughout Contra Costa County since 2001 using Bay Area Air Quality Management District funds and the Contra Costa Transportation Authority’s half-cent sales tax for transportation funds.

When my friend first pointed out this article to me from the San Jose Mercury News about a new app being released in Walnut Creek that provides, “an alert when the green light is about to shine” I thought it must have been meant as an April Fool’s joke. But the app, called Enlighten, is linked to Walnut Creek’s traffic lights and will chime to alert the driver of an impending green light.
Read the article here and tell me whether this is a solution looking for a problem.
Spotted these massive black tanks in the La Fiesta Square parking lot last week. Anyone know what it’s for? I like the phone number to call for more info: 1-800-Baker12
Is this for a bakery? 🙂
Spotted in Concord, the sign says, “El Azucar Muerde” (Sugar Bites):
From the first 5 Contra Costa website:
In an effort to prevent childhood obesity, First 5 Contra Costa and the Healthy and Active Before 5 collaborative have launched a hard-hitting campaign urging parents to protect their toddlers and preschoolers from sugary drinks, and serve them water instead.
As you can see from the artwork, we’re not pulling any punches with this campaign.
A couple of weeks ago I was passing by the Walgreens being developed in downtown Lafayette when I spotted this water leak right behind the fence. Although it’s hard to tell from the photo it was GUSHING water. I called EBMUD to report it so hopefully the leak was fixed.
Now we learn that California is imposing a 25% reduction in water usage. SFGATE reports that EBMUD is, “considering a drought surcharge of 25 percent on average on all users so that it can buy additional water” as well as “considering imposing excessive-use penalties on customers who consume four to six times as much water as average.”
Do you plan on reducing water usage? If so, how?
