He is the author of the bestselling cult classic Nature Noir and will read from and discuss his new book, Engineering Eden: The True Story of a Violent Death, a Trial, and the Fight over Controlling Nature.
Engineering Eden is the story of the 1972 Yellowstone National Park death of Harry Eugene Walker, who was killed and partially eaten by a grizzly bear during the festivities celebrating the hundredth anniversary of the park. The incident led to a civil trial that included some of the most famous wildlife biologists in a fierce scientific dispute over how to repair nature when we damage it, and who is responsible for the unintended consequenes when we get it wrong.
