Film Screening – Miss Representation:

Walnut Creek Library
1644 N. Broadway, Walnut Creek
Saturday, May 10th, 2014
2:00pm | Free

Mother’s Day, a day devoted to perhaps the most influential woman in our lives, is just around the corner.

Why not spend some time thinking about the role of women on a different scale? Written and directed by Jennifer Siebel Newsom, this film looks at how mainstream media under-represents women in positions of power and influence in America. The film challenges the media’s limited and often disparaging portrayals of women and girls, which make it difficult for women to achieve leadership positions and for the average woman to feel powerful herself. This thought-provoking documentary features interviews with politicians, journalists, entertainers, activists and academics, like Condoleezza Rice, Nancy Pelosi, Katie Couric, Rachel Maddow, Margaret Cho, Rosario Dawson and Gloria Steinem. The film has been rated appropriate for ages 13 and up by CommonSense Media.

Come watch the film, see what you think, and stay to participate in a discussion after the film. The screening will take place at 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 10, 2014 in the Oak View Room at the Walnut Creek Library. Can’t make the screening? The Contra Costa County Library has copies available for checking out with your library card. For more information about the film, visit the film’s website:
