1819 Colfax St, Concord
The restaurant La Fritanguera Nicaraguan Cuisine, currently catering at Nica Lounge in Concord is opening a new restaurant a few blocks away. Check out their current menu here. “Influenced by Spanish and Caribbean cuisine” sounds intriguing, I look forward to checking this place out!
From their website:
We are driven to bring the first Nicaraguan food experience to the East Bay.
Sorry, No Burritos!
La Fritanguera offers traditional vibrant and mouthwatering combination plates. Our well balanced dishes include a blend of sweet, tangy and savory flavors that will cater to our diverse communities.Nicaraguan food includes a mixture of native indigenous “Miskito” culture, which is also, greatly influenced by Spanish and Caribbean cuisine. These are flavors we want the East Bay to experience and devour.
Veranda Shopping Center, Concord
Last year we learned that the supermarket 365 by Whole Foods would be coming to the new Veranda shopping center in Concord where Chevron offices used to be, right next to Willows shopping center, and last month Inside Scoop reported that San Francisco-based Super Duper Burgers will be expanding to the Veranda as well this fall. Check out the progress in the above photo and menu here.
From their website:
Step into any Super Duper Burger, and you’ll notice we’re different. From our famous (free) house-made pickles, to the hand-painted signage, to our cheerful staff, we build our restaurants like we build our burgers—sustainably, locally, and with an unwavering commitment to quality. We work with local designers, sign painters, and artisans because it reduces our carbon footprint, and, frankly, because they’re some of the best in the world.
All our beef is humanely-raised, 100% vegetarian-fed, ground fresh daily, and sourced from family-owned ranches.
Our buns are baked to our specification by an artisan baker in San Francisco.
All of our shakes and cones are made with organic cream from Straus Family Creamery, a small, family-owned, organic farm located on the pastoral shores of Tomales Bay.
Sunvalley Shopping Center, Concord
Earlier this year we learned that Dojo Ramen Bar would be coming to Sunvalley Shopping Center in Concord in their new food court area but when I stopped by recently the signage has been removed. The “coming soon” page is still up on the mall directory so hopefully they’ll still be opening…

2022 Salvio St, Concord
It’s the end of an era as Concord Jewelers is set to close April 1st. This family-owned business has been in the same family for over 30 years, and the store has been in the same location since 1946 and the same street since 1907! Check out their website here where they may still sell some pieces online.
According to a newspaper article taped to the wall, it was founded by Charles W. Thissell (one of the first Concord photographers) in 1907 where in addition to selling jewelry and repairing watches, also sold Edison phonographs and Victor talking machines.
Side note: This is one of my favorite photographs after converting the iPhone 6s color image to black and white using the Silver Efex Pro 2 Nik plugin. The checkerboard flooring, vertical lines at the edges and glass square tiles combined with the old style lettering on the window/door really makes this pop. Farewell Concord Jewelers!
