The sign says, “closed for vacation” outside the Chinese restaurant Lily’s House in downtown Lafayette but apparently a new Chinese restaurant with new owners will be opening soon in this location when the remodel has finished. Stay tuned…

6:30pm | $22The notion that humans can fundamentally alter the biochemistry of something as big as the Earth’s atmosphere is science fiction to some people. While politicians debate whether climate change is real, authors and filmmakers are tackling the far out notions in a new genre called Climate Fiction or Cli-Fi. How wild could a hot and crowded world get?
Films conveying a post-apocolyptic world include Interstellar, Waterworld, WallE and of course The Day After Tomorrow. Literature peering into a eco-dystopian future includes Paolo Bacigalupi’s The Windup Girl and Kim Stanley Robinson’s 2312.
The New Yorker called Kim Stanley Robinson “one of the greatest living science fiction writers.” Jason Mark recently penned an op-ed in The New York Times about Cli-Fi.
Join us for a broad conversation about climate fiction, film, science, politics, and more!

Good bye The Art Room, hello retail. That’s the plan as a newly proposed dodecagon-shaped retail building is planned for The Art Room location in downtown Lafayette. The proposal went to the Design Review commission last night. Plans are for the 1,233 sf existing Art Room to be replaced by a 2,500 sf, 12 sided retail building.
A few years ago there were plans for a restaurant. A comment from last week’s post about the La Fiesta parking lot pay meters mentioned that people should request more bike parking for this area.

7:00pm – 9:00pmThe Spaniards got it wrong.
It wasn’t the chocolate in Montezuma’s infamous brew that kept his harem happy; it was Vanilla!
From Mesoamerica to modern times we have been seduced by the alluring aroma and tantalizing taste of vanilla. But why?
Come join Patricia Rain, Vanilla Queen and author, for a seriously sensual evening celebrating vanilla’s scandalously seductive history.

Back in September we learned that the parking lot at La Fiesta Square in downtown Lafayette would be getting parking meters and they are now online with a $1.50 per hour charge, max two hour stay. When I dropped by the other evening it was quite full so this looks like what was intended; free up spots so it’s not completely full while bringing in more revenue.
Unfortunately La Fiesta stores do not offer free parking validation which surprises me. Will you pay to park at La Fiesta Square? Will you look around for street parking further away? Are you more inclined to bike or to go elsewhere?

Use Lane B? This may one of the most confusing parking signs I have ever seen. This parking lot is located next to the Lafayette library and if this were a parking sign it would be baffling but it’s actually a shopping sign for the little take-out espresso stand in the middle of the parking lot. Makes more sense now…
