Driving on Moraga Rd. in downtown Lafayette over the weekend I noticed three glass murals on the side of Itrim in La Fiesta Square. They are the work of the Ellen Blakeley Studio in Santa Rosa.
From her website:
Working as a professional ceramist in 1993, Ellen stopped one day to pick up the glass from a shattered bus shelter in her San Francisco neighborhood. Vandals had shot out the glass with BB guns; it lay in glittering heaps on the asphalt. Already versed in the art of mosaic, Ellen started experimenting with the tempered glass, soon realizing that the transparent surface would lend itself to endless design opportunities. Her discovery led her into the reflective world of glass mosaic, utilizing her fine art sensibility to illuminate the transparent glass with color, rhythm and texture.
If you have a moment in La Fiesta Square I encourage you to drop by as they look incredible especially when the sun is reflecting, giving it a shimmering glow.

Diablo Blvd. With the Lafayette Clocktower now home to three fashion boutiques (Francesca’s, Lanvie, and Venture) I can envision another kind of boutique opening up.

Long considered a pet friendly town, Lafayette is giving top billing to its canine community for its first-ever Dogtown Downtown event, scheduled for Saturday, April 12, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. This is an event about – and for – dogs and dog lovers.
Designed to be a fun and festive canine-focused event, Lafayette Dogtown Downtown includes outdoor demonstrations, fun dog competitions, and other activities for dog lovers of all ages. Pet adoptions will be available and animal rescue group representatives will be on hand, as well as other dog-related vendors.
True to Lafayette’s passion for lifelong learning, the Dogtown Downtown event also has a strong educational offering – a curriculum of ten 30-minute presentations by veterinary specialists from UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine and the Bay Area’s SAGE Centers for Veterinary Specialty and Emergency Care. Organized in two tracks, topics range from pet first aid, toxins, environmental hazards, behavioral issues, and the veterinary blood bank, to how to become a veterinarian or veterinarian technician.
Admission and related activities, including the presentations, are free, but registration is encouraged, either online or at the event. Be among the first to register and receive a complimentary Lafayette Dogtown Downtown canine first aide starter kit when you check in at the event, while supplies last.

After 15 years in business Bo’s Barbecue is closing in Lafayette on Mt. Diablo Blvd. The lease is up end of July and it’s not being renewed according to this article in the Contra Costa Times. In the article the owner Bo McSwine says he may open a new barbecue restaurant in the China Basin neighborhood of San Francisco where AT&T Park is located.
