Spotted across from Miramonte High School in Orinda on Moraga Way. The owners really went all out decorating with numerous bear sculptures, a bench, and other animals over the past couple of years. Great job!

One of the oldest houses in Orinda, known as, “The Old Yellow House”, despite its faded pink color, has been bought by architect James P. Wright who plans on having it restored by his firm Net Zero Homes, which will be documented on their Facebook page.
The house, built in 1894, is located at 209 Moraga Way, and had been on the market for many years before finally selling for $335K in March. At the end of 2007 it was listed at $875K. You can find out more about the house in a October, 2007 article in the Orinda News.
In addition to restoring the house itself, this looks like it’s a great marketing opportunity for Net Zero Homes due to the historical significance, and it being on a well-trafficked road. I look forward to checking up on the progress of this restoration.
With Orinda Theatre Square coming alive lately, the aMFa art gallery, located next to the soon to be opened Barbacoa Mexican restaraunt is in a great location to take advantage of visitors dining out or shopping. In addition to art by the owner Allison McCrady, other artists are represented as well:
The piece at left, which I was immediately drawn to, has already been sold by the way, but there are plenty of other exciting pieces available so drop by if you have the chance.
aMFa also offer art classes for $300 per term. Occasionally they display (and paint) outside the gallery/studio in Orinda Square which makes for a pleasant experience while strolling around downtown Orinda.

This Thursday is Bike to Work Day and there will be Energizer Stations in both Walnut Creek and Lamorinda serving refreshments and promotional items throughout the day. From their website:
Come help celebrate National Bike Month and California Bike Commute Week in May with Bike to Work Day. Bike to Work Day is a promotional event to encourage non-bike riders to try commuting by bicycle. Bike to Work Day in the San Francisco Bay Area is primarily funded by the Metropolitan Transportation Commission with the help of financial donations from event sponsors and volunteers.
Here is a map of the Walnut Creek and Lamorinda-based Energizer stations:

The US News & World Report has come out with their latest high school rankings, and Campolindo High School in Moraga has come out on top in Lamorinda and Walnut Creek, just edging out Miramonte High School in Orinda. The rankings for the Acalanes Union district can be viewed here, and for California here.
State Rankings
Northgate received a silver medal while all Acalanes Union high schools received a gold medal. Nearby Dublin High School was ranked #4 in California but that may be an error as it shows a 7:1 student/teacher ratio which seems too low for a public school.
Tiny Feet, a new children’s shoe store in the Orinda Theatre Square, opened last December, and is I believe the only children’s shoe store in all of Lamorinda. There is a little play area in one corner and is nicely decorated throughout. Check out the interior below:
If you’re in the market for high quality children’s shoes I would definitely check this place out.
It’s been a while since I’ve been to the Orinda Theatre Square and I have to say it’s really coming alive with new stores and restaurants. A new florist is having a soft opening on Friday called Anahid Designs. They were originally located in Santa Monica, then San Lorenzo and the owner has been doing floral designs the past 12 years. They are available for weddings and special events.
Check out an example of their work:
The grand opening will be held on May 5th. Just in time for Mother’s Day.

The Contra Costa Times reported that a Pleasant Hill man died in a crash on Highway 24 earlier today after hitting a tree. It was reported that the driver was driving erratically. A pit bull in the car survived.
I happened to drive past the accident, well after it happened but before the car was removed and couldn’t believe what happened to the car. I’ve never seen a car so smashed up before.
