The Orchards at Walnut Creek
Another day, another Starbucks opens in Walnut Creek, this time in the Orchards shopping center where of course a Starbucks inside Safeway exists a couple of doors down.

Broadway Plaza, Walnut Creek
It came as a surprise to me when I parked my car at Broadway Plaza a couple of weeks ago that they still hadn’t started charging for parking at their garages. They were supposed to begin charging September 12th but it’s still free to park. According to a text message from Broadway Plaza, they, “do not have a set date for when [they] will be adding the parking charge”.

Shops at the new Orchards shopping center across from Encina Grande on Ygnacio Rd. are slowly opening up with the latest being Petco. With Petsmart opening across the street at Encina Grande it will be great for local pet owners.

In April we learned that the home decor and furniture shop Z Gallerie would be returning to downtown Walnut Creek early next year but according to the signage on the window vacated by Anthropologie look for a November opening. Their website notes a December opening so we’ll see….

The grab-and-go juice, meal and snack spot Urban Remedy opened recently in downtown Walnut Creek next to Veggie Grill. It reminded me of Pressed Juicery a block away but they emphasized to me that they use organic ingredients. While Urban Remedy doesn’t offer frozen “yogurt” like Pressed does, they do offer ready-to-go meals and snacks. I tried the “Vegan Caesar with Cumin Chickpea Croutons” and cacao chip bar and enjoyed it! Especially since you’re allowed to sit outside where the Veggie Grill tables are. I’m not sure if that’s the official policy but people at both Urban Remedy and Veggie Grill said it’s ok to sit there which is great! Check out their meals and snacks here and juices here.
More photos of the inside after the jump…
Anyone else notice this?
From a reader:
While riding my bike back from Safeway in downtown WC, I noticed a number of large “living areas” that had been cut out and blocked off by homeless residents on the side of the trail opposite the canal between Safeway and Trinity Center. I don’t know how much patrolling that trail gets but my assumption is that if it doesn’t get any attention, it’ll only get worse.
Encina Grande, Walnut Creek
It’s been a bit longer than a year since Safeway closed in the Encina Grande shopping center on Ygnacio Valley Rd. in Walnut Creek and now Whole Foods is set to open on November 2nd according to this article in the East Bay Times. The article highlights that there will be a self-serve pizza station, coffee, beer and wine bar as well as “high-tech digital ordering kiosks that let customers order sandwiches, burritos and other items on an iPad before picking them up when done shopping”. Can’t wait to check it out!
Last week Safeway reopened across the street in the new Orchards shopping center. Thanks to a reader for pointing out the article.
1776:
Lesher Center for the Arts
1601 Civic Dr, Walnut Creek
Friday, October 7th – Saturday, November 5th, 2016The most fascinating leaders in American history come to life in a musical about the birth of a nation!
A revolution is brewing in the colonies! It’s up to John Adams – the outspoken delegate from Massachusetts, Benjamin Franklin of Pennsylvania and Thomas Jefferson of Virginia – to convince a stubborn congress of British colonists to unite as American patriots, channel their freedom-loving spirit and turn the inevitable war with England into a Declaration of Independence. 1776 puts a human face on the pages of history as proud, frightened, uncertain, irritable, charming, often petty and ultimately noble figures determine to do the right thing for a fledgling nation.
Funny, insightful and compelling Tony Award-winning Best Musical.

The Bedford Gallery in downtown Walnut Creek has a new exhibit called ReTooled: Highlights from the Hechinger Collection through November 27th.
From the exhibit website:
These imaginative works come from the tool-inspired collection of John Hechinger, owner of the mid-Atlantic hardware store chain popular in the 1980s-90s. Hechinger was an active community patron and civil rights advocate in his hometown of Washington, D.C. He also firmly believed in creating dynamic, engaging arts experiences for people of all backgrounds. The four themes in ReTooled –Objects of Beauty, Material Illusions, Instruments of Satire and Tools: An Extension of Self – showcase this belief in an innovative collection of paintings, sculptures, works on paper, and photographs.
