Thanks to a reader for pointing out that according to Macerich’s (the owner of Broadway Plaza) 2015 first quarter earnings report, the clothing store Zara, and Kit and Ace (active wear from the founder of Lululemon) are coming to Broadway Plaza in downtown Walnut Creek.

A new cycling gym, Flywheel Sports, is coming to downtown Walnut Creek and will be located in the same building as CoreYoga Power, which opened in February on North Main St.

10:00am – 5:00pm | $5EBRC is East Bay Renegade Cosplay and we have been around for about two years now with almost 200 members on our Meetup.com site and continue to host all kinds of cosplay related events. This is going to be an all-ages cosplay event jam-packed with nerdy contests and activities! Since this is the second year that we are hosting it, I have reserved a spot at a mid-sized park. So despite reserving the largest space there, there is an event capacity limit of 300 people. This means that to ensure you get a spot you should pre-pay for the event using the link below. (Which will also help me to purchase food, awards, prizes, etc.) I will be putting up a schedule of activities when it gets closer to the event as well as sign-ups and other details, but so far we have been kicking around the ideas of a costume contest, trivia contests, photo shoots, cosplay photography contests and a myriad of other activities including a fabric/costume swap! We learned a lot from last year and have several plans in the works! We hope to see you there!

I’m excited to share that Tender Greens’ Walnut Creek location will host Farmer Market Cooking Classes & Summer Series with Chef Sean Eastwood with three editions of a Farmers Market Walk, Cooking Class and Lunch with Bay Area local, Chef Sean (you may have seen his Farmer’s Market experience in the San Jose Mercury News Eat Drink Play column recently, and he’s excited to bring this experience to Bay Area locals, firsthand!)
The first class will be on Sunday, June 14, 2015 beginning at 9 a.m. with a seasonal focus on stone fruits (cherries, peaches, apricots, pluots and cherries), and will continue once a month all summer long. Each class will have a different seasonal focus and guests can opt for one class or take all three. A full schedule of this summer’s events is below.
At each class, guests can enjoy an interactive, hands-on farmers market walk with Chef Eastwood to learn about the local produce with tastings along the way. With their farmers market haul in tow, guests will fully immerse themselves in the farm-fresh lifestyle by joining in a cooking class led by Chef Sean, followed by a private lunch with wine pairings.

As a huge fan of Élevé‘s pork firepot dish, it’s with trepidation learning that the Vietnamese restaurant will be closing on June 27th as chef owner Michele DuRye plans on reopening as an American style restaurant late July. Called Library on Main, according to Diablo Dish, it will, “feature a retro library theme, walls of books, quotes from famous writers, and other nods to the written word” which is apt since the original Walnut Creek library was located at this corner. Stay tuned…
I think it’s great that recycled water is being used to irrigate downtown Walnut Creek’s flowers, but shouldn’t the sign say, “Irrigated with Recycled Water”?

A couple of weeks ago we learned that Izakaya Jun would be soft-opening in downtown Walnut Creek and they opened over the weekend. The wood paneling looks great with a long bar towards the back and various sake bottles decorating the perimeter. I sat there and enjoyed eating dishes I haven’t tried since being in Japan such as shiokara (fermented squid) and yaki onigiri (grilled rice balls) with ume (pickled plum) and grilled salmon. (See photos after the jump). Both went great with the draft Asahi beer they offer. (Warning: shiokara is an acquired taste, try it if you dare!)
