10:00am – 12:00pm | FreeOn Saturday, August 23rd, the Contra Costa Master Gardeners (CCMG) and the Walnut Creek Library will present a free two-hour lecture on Backyard Vineyards. The lecture will be held from 10:00 A.M. to 12:00 P.M.at the Walnut Creek Library, located at 1644 N. Broadway in Walnut Creek. Join us in the 2nd floor Oak View Room to learn different ways to improve your garden soil.
CCMG’s experts Jim DeFrisco & Brad Miller will provide an introduction to growing both table and wine grapes; you’ll learn what you need to get started, how to plant your grapes, and how to care for and maintain grapevines throughout the year. There will be time for questions and answers after the presentation.
The talk is free and open to the public and registration is not required.

3:30pm – 5:30pm | FreeOn Saturday August 16, at 3:30pm, join presenter Todd Javadi and Shabahang music group for An Afternoon of Rumi at Walnut Creek Library. The free event will be an immersive experience of sound and visual stimulation focusing on the 13th century poet’s works, presented in the original Farsi and with English translation.
Rumi was a 13th century Persian poet and mystic. His writings transcend cultural boundaries, focusing on everyday life’s connection with the spiritual world. Rumi is regarded as the most popular poet in America and his work has been translated into many languages, including English, Russian, German, Turkish, Arabic, French, Italian, and Spanish.
Todd Tooradj Javadi (Speaker, coordinator) has been sharing Rumi’s works and inspirations for the last 18 years, starting at College of Marin, classes at School of Practical Philosophy in Pleasanton, lecturing in many Universities, churches, and public forums. He is now teaching monthly classes of Rumi in Walnut Creek and Marin County.

7:15pm | $25String Archguitarist Jon Mendle has performed at Carnegie Hall and beyond. His debut album, “L’Infidele ” was produced by Latin Grammy winner Sergio Assad. Jon is a member of the San Francisco Guitar Quartet and the Pacific Guitar Ensemble. He has also toured with Yo-Yo Ma and the Silk Road Ensemble.

The Broadway Plaza redevelopment in downtown Walnut Creek has completed the demolition phase as you can see by the lack of buildings next to Macy’s and Macy’s itself is getting refurbished, at least on the outside, as you can see in the photos. The side next to Corners Tavern looks like it’s getting a small addition as well.

Fisher’s interest in the Amish began with her grandfather, who was raised Plain. Join us for an evening in which she discusses why mainstream culture is so fascinated by the Amish.
Fisher lives with her family in the San Francisco Bay Area. She is the author of over 20 books, including Carol Award winner “The Search,” Christy Award finalist “The Waiting,” and “Amish Peace: Simple Wisdom for a Complicated World,” a finalist for the ECPA Book of the Year.
“Amish Wisdom” is a free app, available for iPhones, iPads and Androids, that delivers a daily proverb from the Penn Dutch tradition. Fisher also manages a blog called Amish Wisdom that provides readers with the latest books and information about the Plain people.
