Strolling through Downtown Walnut Creek I couldn’t help but notice mannequins at Labels consignment boutique wearing fashionable face masks. A sign of the times.

Downtown Walnut Creek
Yesterday a woman was shot in downtown Walnut Creek with looters targeting Broadway Plaza, Target and other stores according to SFGate, with a curfew in effect from 8pm to 5am each night through June 8th. I saw many shops being boarded up a few hours earlier including the Apple store, Main Street Kitchen & Bar, Williams-Sonoma, Zara, Camera West, Warby Parker, Sasa and elsewhere. The videos of the looters show how brazen they were. Unbelievable.
From the City of Walnut Creek:
Due to incidents of vandalism, theft and violence, the City of Walnut Creek has issued a curfew to be in effect overnight.
The City Manager, as Director of Emergency Services, imposed a citywide curfew through 5:00 a.m. on Monday, June 1. The curfew will be in place from 8:00 p.m. until 5:00 a.m. each evening through Monday, June 8. It requires residents, visitors and workers within the City of Walnut Creek to stay indoors during those hours. Exemptions include public safety personnel, health care providers, people traveling to and from work, and media representatives.
Broadway Plaza, Walnut Creek
Over the weekend I saw a large presentation happening inside the Apple store at Broadway Plaza in downtown Walnut Creek and according to their page they are now open from 11am, with special measures in place:
To ensure a clean, safe environment, we’re taking these extra measures:
- Limiting store occupancy
- Face coverings (will be provided)
- Touchless temperature checks
- Social distancing
- Continuous deep cleaning
Thanks to a reader for sending a picture of the “Masked Bulldog” in downtown Walnut Creek. The “Bullman with Bulldog” sculpture first appeared at the corner of Main St. and Mt. Diablo Blvd. about three years ago.

Broadway Plaza, Walnut Creek
Last month we learned that Plaza Escuela in Walnut Creek closed their benches to encourage social distancing and now Broadway Plaza is getting into the act with the recent closure of the patio next to the Apple store.
“The Future is Bright”
—J.Crew
Is the future really bright for private equity-owned J.Crew, the clothing store who declared bankruptcy last week? I don’t know, let’s ask other private equity owned stores like Toys “R” Us, Sports Authority, and Gymboree.
Last month we noted that Plaza Escuela taped off benches in response to the coronavirus pandemic and only a short time later some of the tape has been ripped off. Looks like some people really want to get back to normalcy and are chafing at the restrictions.
Trinity Ave, Walnut Creek
A few years ago we learned about a new condo complex going up in downtown Walnut Creek called Three by Lenox Homes, and as you can see in the above photo, lots of progress is being made. Check out all of the 2 bedroom/2 bath plans here. Prices start in the LOW $1M’S.
A new sign recently sprouted around downtown Walnut Creek exclaiming “WE’RE OPEN – Support Walnut Creek Businesses” and it looks like thanks to the nice weather and quarantine exhaustion, more and more people are venturing out. Both Lottie’s and San Francisco Creamery had lines with people looking to get their ice cream fix outside. This is definitely the busiest I ‘ve seen downtown Walnut Creek since the quarantine began in a couple of months ago.
Citrus Marketplace, Walnut Creek
Thanks to those who emailed (and sent the above photo); Denica’s, which opened about seven years ago, recently closed at Citrus Marketplace in Walnut Creek. Their other three locations are temporarily closed due to the pandemic. Check for updates on their website here.
