Artist Call for Downtown Walnut Creek Art Project:
Walnut Creek Downtown’s 2018 Community Service Day project will coordinate community artwork featured on the downtown’s 40 Big Belly waste bins.
WCD will conduct a public artist call to gather artwork which will be displayed in frames (31 7/16” w x 45” h) attached to the sides of the Big Belly’s as well as the back of the paired units, if logical. Artists are encouraged to incorporate recycling messages into their colorful creations as the newest addition to the City’s public art program. The project will be funded by Contra Costa County’s Solid Waste Authority’s Recycle Smart program. Selected artists will be acknowledged by having their artwork displayed on WCD’s website.
The deadline to submit artwork is August 6th, 11:59 pm
Label each submission with artist name and title of work
Artists should upload their submission via Dropbox by emailing their Dropbox link to services@walnutcreekdowntown.com

In March we learned that Soft Surroundings, a St. Louis-based women’s catalog retailer would be coming to Broadway Plaza in Walnut Creek and the coming soon signage is now up next to Aldo and although their website still indicates a fall opening, the signage that is up now points to a winter, 2018 opening. Check out their online catalog here.

Earlier this month we learned about a new Vietnamese restaurant called Mangosteen opening in downtown Walnut Creek where Kanishka’s used to be and they are getting ready to open very soon. Interestingly, the owners are from La Sen Bistro around the corner.
Broadway Plaza, Walnut Creek
The Apple store reopened in Broadway Plaza over the weekend across the street from their previous location in downtown Walnut Creek. Obviously it’s a beautiful store with tall ceilings, and wrap-around, floor-to-ceiling windows allowing plenty of light in. The front of the store showcases their products while the back of the store features a Genius “grove” instead of “bar” to handle support issues with a giant LCD wall screen splitting the two sections up. The LCD screen area hosts various sessions to learn about Apple products and techniques like photography, music, coding and more. Check out and reserve current sessions here. The reason why it feels so spacious inside is thanks to the basement that was added to store their inventory etc.
Right outside in back are several tables with the patio area extending all the way out to the remodeled fountain and benches. Interestingly the Apple logo at the old store was blacked out but protruded nonetheless; check out this photo and more inside photos after the jump. What do you think of the new store? Has it met your expectations?

Along with the new Apple store opening at Broadway Plaza tomorrow in downtown Walnut Creek are new electronic displays with advertisements on one side and a clickable store directory on the other. I wonder what operating system they’re running, not MacOS? Maybe Apple should start selling an embedded OS to compete with Linux… 😜

A new exhibit at the Bedford Gallery in downtown Walnut Creek, The World of Frida, is on display through September 16th.
From the exhibit website:
This summer the Bedford Gallery celebrates the culture, style, and persona of visionary painter Frida Kahlo, an artist who continues to inspire with her story of love, adventure, and pain. The World of Frida weaves juried and invitational shows that reference the artist with a national, traveling photography exhibit titled Frida Kahlo: Through the Lens of Nickolas Muray that makes a stop in Walnut Creek after traveling across North America. Hungarian-born Muray—who met Kahlo in a chance encounter in Mexico in 1931 and became her lover and friend—shot some of the most iconic color and black and white images of the artist that exist. This exhibition is organized by the Nickolas Muray Photo Archives and is circulated through GuestCurator Traveling Exhibitions.
