Ghirardelli Chocolate Earthquake Ice Cream Eating Contest: A Ghirardelli Chocolate Festival Tradition! Festival attendees compete or just witness the hilarity as six lucky people eat the famous Ghirardelli “Earthquake” Sundae as fast as they can without hands. Battling each other and their own stomachs, competitors are sure to make this experience a memorable (and delicious) one. Children also compete with a smaller version of the famous Earthquake Sundae. There are three competitions on both Saturday and Sunday.

Ikoi Sushi Opens for Dinner in Downtown Walnut Creek

The Japanese restaurant Ikoi Sushi that we learned would be opening in downtown Walnut Creek where Haleh Pastry used to be has opened for dinner for now. This is the same owner as Koji’s in Danville, which closed a few years ago. Check out their menu here and here.

Safety Issue in Downtown Walnut Creek

I feel like a total weenie complaining about this, but tonight in downtown walnut creek my best friend and I were almost followed to our car by some creep that had been lingering around us near the little seating area near True Food Kitchen.

I noticed him skate toward us coming from the Broadway Plaza, and he saw us and was lingering near the SoulCycle doors, then came and sat next to us and oddly pulled his chair closer to us, then [my friend] said we should go, not even realizing he was creeping but just that he was staring at her – as soon as we got up, he got up too and followed us near the entrance and I slowed down before we got too far into the garage and quietly said “Is he following us” and [my friend] said yes, so we stopped walking and he immediately stopped too and realized that we noticed what he was trying to do, so he pretended like he was going to use the vending machine. Then we walked back to the seating area and some nice SoulCycle girls helped us get security to escort us to our car and by that time he had disappeared.

Friday Question of the Day – What Unhealthy Habits do you have?

The other night I stopped by CVS to pick up something and while waiting in line I noticed a middle-aged man with a big bag of potato chips and a six pack of beer waiting in front of me. As someone who has experienced digestive issues I imagined him eating this when he got back home and cringed. Then I noticed he also was buying a big tub of TUMS and I felt really bad since I think eating TUMS may be masking issues he may be going through which may lead to serious consequences. When he then reached for a bag of M&Ms at the counter… Of course he may have bought this to share with his family throughout the week, who knows? It made me wonder what unhealthy habits I could work on. Like getting off my butt and walking around more instead of sitting in front of my desk all day at work.

The sidewalk around the new Lyric apartment complex in downtown Walnut Creek has opened up with the blowout salon Drybar opening soon and as you can see in the above sign the apartments are now leasing. Check out the pricing and availability on their website here. A <500 sf studio starts at $2,300 while a 1BR ranges from $2,669 to about $3,500. Explore the important legacy of women who answered the call during World War II in the National Park Service presentation “Women on the Home Front.” Free and open to the public, this program is the first in a series celebrating Walnut Creek’s 2017 One City, One Book, “Hidden Figures” by Margot Lee Shetterly.

Six million women entered the workforce during World War II, taking on vital construction and manufacturing jobs while men were fighting overseas. The women were symbolized by Rosie the Riveter and her tagline “We Can Do It.” We’ll examine the history and legacy of Home Front workers in a screening of the National Park Service film Hometown Heroes. Additionally, NPS Deputy Superintendent Sue Fritzke will talk about changes that occurred in boom towns across America,including Richmond, CA, the site of Rosie the Riveter/WWII Home Front National Historical Park. If you, your mother, or grandmother was a Rosie, bring your story to share!

Pacific Catch Opening December in Downtown Walnut Creek

In April we learned that the seafood restaurant Pacific Catch would be coming to Agora at South Main across from Broadway Plaza in Walnut Creek and the coming soon signage is up with a planned December opening.
