Songs and stories of Neil Diamond performed by Jack Wright is a sophisticated, authentic performance of the hit songs that have kept Neil Diamond in the hearts of his fans for more than five decades. Jack Wright captures Neil’s poetic expressions of wide-ranging emotions and the eclectic mix of his varied musical styles. His natural voice and stage presence are pure Neil – no posturing or over-the-top-mimicry. And it goes beyond the music with the sharing of stories about Neil’s life and explanations of his sometimes complex and complicated lyrics. He interprets the songs the way Neil must have felt when he wrote them, and he connects with his audiences the way Neil always has, while making the songs his own.

SF Jazz Concert John Luther Adams ‘Inuksuit’:
Sutro Baths
1004 Point Lobos Ave, San Francisco
Saturday, July 29th, 2017
1:00pm | FreeDescribed by The New York Times as “the ultimate environmental piece” and lauded by eminent New Yorker critic Alex Ross as “one of the most rapturous experiences of my listening life,” Inuksuit is an innovative composition for up to 99 percussionists placed singly or in small groups throughout a large open-air space. Named for the iconic human-shaped stone monuments erected by indigenous peoples of the Arctic to mark important locations, Inuksuit is intended to create a harmonious marriage of music and geography that allows the audience to create their own experience as they move within the vast performance area. As listeners’ walk, the balance between various musicians located within the space changes, mixed with the natural sounds of the environment – a primary aspect of the concept the composer calls “sonic geography.”
I was at the CVS parking lot in downtown Walnut Creek the other day checking out progress on Philz coffee shop, not paying attention to the sign in some but not all of the spots:
Private Parking
Spaces Reserved
Employee Parking Program
$30 charge
Online registration required
Be careful parking in that lot. It looks like you can get a ticket even if you were to shop at the stores located there!
This week we learned that after being in downtown Walnut Creek for over 20 years, Lark Creek closed for good. That got me thinking about the old-school restaurants in the area. Downtown Walnut Creek still has Prima, Lafayette has Postino. I asked this question over five years ago but I think it’s appropriate to ask again; what’s your favorite old-school restaurant?
Richard Smith/Pat Bergeson Playing:
Mighty Fine Guitars
85 Lafayette Cir, Lafayette
Friday, July 28th, 2017
8:00 PM | $15 – $20 suggestedThere are vanishingly few guitarists can stand toe to toe with Tommy Emmanuel. Richard Smith is such a man.
Richard would be more than an evening’s entertainment all by himself. But this time he and world-class jazz guitarist Pat Bergeson take the stage as a duo, having just driven up from a Tommy Emmanuel guitar camp mid-state. These two, on stage together in the intimate vibe of The Big Room? You do not want to miss this show!
25A Orinda Way, Orinda
In March we learned that Orangetheory Fitness would be coming to the new development across the street from the Orinda library and now Coffee Shop is also planning on opening in this location according to an email from What’s Up Downtown Orinda. With their original cafe in Walnut Creek, and more recently, Lafayette, they are really focusing on the East Bay city by city. Check out their roasters here.
From their website:
Coffee Shop is your go-to neighborhood joint, any time, any day. Join us for specialty coffee to pep you up in the morning, organic smoothies, juices, and food to fuel your day, and craft beer, wine, and cocktails to get your night started!
Orchards Shopping Center, Walnut Creek
A reader asks:
I’m with a local boy scout troop and would like to know if there’s a registration or schedule for using the small amphitheater by the children’s playground.
I didn’t even realize there was an outdoor amphitheater at the Orchards shopping center, pretty cool!
