Had I encountered these drinking fountains last year, I would have been flummoxed. Why not just have a “temporarily out of service” sign? Instead, both fountains are covered with miniature red buckets, each locked with an ominous message, “DANGER – LOCKED OUT”.
This past year have been challenging in many ways, but what minor annoyance bothers you the most due to the lockdown?
The exhibit A Beautiful Mess: Weavers and Knotters of the Vanguard is on display at Bedford Gallery starting this Saturday, March 20th, but can be seen right now virtually at bgviewingroom.org. Find out more about their safety protocols here.
From an email:
The roster of renowned women artists in this exhibition exemplifies the renaissance that is currently rocking the fiber arts scene of weaving, knotting, and macramé. By bringing their unique stories to the forefront, these artists draw from potent source material to create sculptures and installations staggering in beauty and conceptual backing.
- Many artists in the show are Bay Area locals, including: Windy Chien, Dana Hemenway, Lisa Solomon, dani lopez, and Meghan Shimek. Artists Liz Robb, Hannah Perrine Mode and Kira Dominguez Hultgren are former Bay Area residents.
- A Beautiful Mess would be a wonderful fit for coverage this March to commemorate Women’s History Month. The female artists in this exhibition challenge perceptions and narratives around textile arts, a medium traditionally considered domestic work.
- Virtual art workshops with Windy Chien, Lisa Solomon, and many more artists will be announced in the coming weeks!

Thanks to those who emailed that Shake Shack is planning to come to downtown Walnut Creek where Destination Maternity used to be. According to the design review commission, there will be a pick-up window on the left side which will require pre-ordering via an app or website ahead of time which will eliminate lines. Check out their menu here.
From their website:
Shake Shack sprouted from a hot dog cart in Madison Square Park in Manhattan to support the Madison Square Park Conservancy’s first art installation. The cart was quite the success, with Shack fans lined up daily for three summers.
I remember walking through Madison Square Park when I used to work in Manhattan but never ate there until much later in other cities.

With podcasts becoming more popular especially in Covid-19 times, it’s daunting to find new podcasts. My recent podcast listening playlist includes Fresh Air, Here’s the Thing with Alec Baldwin, WTF with Marc Maron, and Sway with Kara Swisher. What are some of your favorite podcasts?
Lyric, Walnut Creek
A new restaurant called Lita’s from Ay Madre! is coming to the Lyric apartment complex in downtown Walnut Creek according to a state ABC sign posted in the window. I’m not sure if it’s going to be called Lita’s or Ay Madre! but I believe this is the first store at this spot of any kind to open since the Lyric first opened in 2017. Blaze Pizza was supposed to open here but they never did. Stay tuned…
