Question of the Day – Do you have to Commute to Work?

Due to the recent Shelter at Home order issued by Bay Are counties I imagine most people are working from home, if they still have a job. Unemployment is skyrocketing for obvious reasons as people huddle at home waiting for the situation to clear up. Some who work at “essential” businesses such as hospitals, groceries, restaurants offering take-out etc. have no option but to go to work, sometimes by mass transit. For those that must commute, are you worried or is it so empty that it’s not hard to maintain the six foot social distancing rule?

Question of the Day – How Bad is the Coronavirus Pandemic going to Get?

A little over two weeks ago there were zero local cases of coronavirus in Contra Costa with little concern among some who were more worried about spreading unfounded hysteria than the spread of the virus itself. Fast forward to today and at least 17 people in Contra Costa and thousands in the US are infected with coronavirus, with many more expected. Stocks are in a bear market with a 20+% drop over recent highs. The NBA, Coachella, and even Disneyland will close. Locally, most events and even schools are being cancelled with more people working from home, leaving businesses like restaurants and cafes suffering from lack of diners.

Despite the gloomy news, some people aren’t worried and go on their day as if nothing changed besides possibly washing their hands more often. How much worse is this going to get? Will it peter out as summer approaches? Or will this lead to a recession with many more infections and deaths? Are you going to change your shopping patterns to go when it’s less crowded?

Question of the Day – What is your Favorite Public Art?

Yesterday we learned that the public art stick-work sculptures were removed after two years at Civic Park in downtown Walnut Creek. There are plenty other public art pieces in the East Bay including the Hand of Peace sculpture seen in the above photo. What is your favorite public art in the East Bay and also in the US and beyond?

Question of the Day – Are you Worried about Coronavirus?

The times right now are not looking very good given the havoc brought by the respiratory disease coronavirus as countries scramble to protect their citizens and economies from being destroyed. Even Contra Costa has not been spared as three people, who were infected outside the county, were brought to hospitals for treatment. The practice these local hospitals are getting should prove helpful when more cases are found and treatment sought. Will schools be closed? Will people be told to work from home? How worried are you about coronoavirus? As I rode a packed BART train today I thought to myself, if just one person had the disease, how many of us would become infected? What, if anything, are you doing to prepare for the impending pandemic?

Question of the Day – Do you Work Out at Home or a Gym?

I’ve run for quite a few years but recently I decided to buy some dumbbells on sale at Target thinking I’d start working out at home which would be cheaper and more convenient than going to a gym. But I have yet to pump any iron. Maybe I should have joined a gym instead? Do you work out at home or at a gym? What is your workout routine?

Question of the Day – Do you Miss Pay Phones?

These days almost everyone carries around their own phone so pay phones have gone the way of the dodo. No matter where I am I see people glued to their phones rather than being present wherever they may be. I’m guilty of this at times as well. Pay phones used to be ubiquitous around cities and were a pain to use at times, but do you ever feel nostalgic for them?

Question of the Day – Would you Lock your Bike at BART for the Day?

On days I ride BART in the evening I take note of all the bikes locked up inside the station but accessible by anyone with a ticket and wonder, are these bikes safe even with U-locks and heavy duty chains? Apparently they can be cut through within a minute or so with hydraulic cutter. Would you lock your bike at a BART station all day? Do the BikeLink lockers work better? Have you ever had your bike stolen from a BART station?

It’s been over ten years since the last time I bought a car and I’ve been told it’s time to buy a new or fairly new one and it should be a Honda or Toyota. How often do you buy a car? New or Used? Domestic or foreign? Do you stick with the same make and model or like to change it up?
