Mikuni Japanese Restaurant & Sushi Bar Opening May 14th in The Veranda in Concord

In March we learned that Sacramento-based Mikuni Japanese Restaurant & Sushi Bar would be coming to the Veranda shopping center in Concord and they are officially opening on May 14th. Check out their Concord menu here. They offer sushi/sashimi as well as hot dishes like gyoza, donburi, teriyaki and more. The inside is spacious with tall ceilings decorated with cool fish sculptures hanging from above as well as TVs liberally spaced out to catch the latest game. With a long sushi bar at one end, traditional bar towards the front plus an outdoor patio section on the side there is plenty of space to enjoy a Japanese style meal with drinks.

Life is Sweet Bakery & Cafe Opening Soon in Danville

Thanks to a reader for sending word that a new gluten-free bakery/cafe called Life is Sweet is opening where Pascal’s used to be in Danville. In addition to “breakfast, lunch and baked fresh daily pastry items” they will also offer wedding and custom cakes. According to a sign in the window the owners of Pascal’s are retiring after 8 years in business.

Life is Sweet is a dedicated gluten free bakery and café located in charming downtown Danville, California. San Ramon Valley High School graduate and Bay Area native Julie Krause, attended the California Cullinary Academy in San Francisco, and immediately went to work in a small local bakery specializing in wedding and custom cakes. After 9 years of perfecting her skills, she returns to Danville to fulfill her life long dream of owning her own Bakery.

Together we bring you Life is Sweet Bakery and Cafe, serving gluten free breakfast, lunch, and assorted baked goods. In addition we have wedding and custom cakes, all of which are also Gluten free.

Smallcakes Cupcakery and Creamery Opens in Danville Square

Smallcakes Cupcakery and Creamery soft opened over the weekend in the Danville Square shopping center where Trader Joe’s is located. I had a chance to try the cupcake-infused Chocoholic ice cream and boy was it delicious. Come summer this may be my go-to dessert when I’m in Danville. Yum! Check out their menu here.

Kick N Mule Bar & Kitchen Opens in Danville

Back in February we learned that the Sacramento-based restaurant Kick N Mule would be coming to Danville where Sweetwater Tavern used to be and they have now opened. Check out their menu here. According to this Facebook post the soft opening will be May 10th and feature 25 different Moscow Mules, 16 beers on tap, specialty cocktails and plenty of TVs.

Bonjour Bakery & Cafe Closes at Park & Shop in Concord

Bonjour Bakery & Cafe, which opened a few years ago in the Park & Shop shopping center in Concord and served Japanese/Korean-style baked goods, has closed. A sign in the windows points to a new bakery opening called Casa del Affajor. According to this Wikipedia article:

An alfajor is a traditional confection found in Uruguay, Chile, Argentina, El Salvador, Peru, Bolivia, Ecuador, Spain, Paraguay, Venezuela, Southern Brazil, and the Philippines. The archetypal alfajor entered Iberia during the period of al-Andalus. It is produced in the form of a small cylinder and is sold either individually or in boxes containing several pieces.

Sig’s Little Kitchen “A Taste of Filipino Cuisine” Soft Opens in Danville

Thanks to a reader for sending word… The Filipino restaurant Sig’s Little Kitchen soft opened at the Crossroads of Danville shopping center on San Ramon Valley Blvd. Check out the menu in the photo below. I look forward to trying this place out!

Hops & Scotch Taproom & Whiskey Bar Opens at Avalon in Walnut Creek

After quite a wait the bar Hops & Scotch has opened in the Avalon apartment complex next to the Pleasant Hill BART station in Walnut Creek. In addition to 150 types of whiskey, cocktails and wine they also carry 40+ rotating beer taps. If you look closely at the photo below you can see the taps. The bottom photo shows the lcd screen featuring the available craft brews. They also offer small plates and have several TVs to catch the latest game. Noodle Theory Coming to Rheem Valley Shopping Center in Moraga

Exciting news for Moraga as the popular Rockridge and Emeryville Asian fusion eatery Noodle Theory is planning on opening a third location in the Rheem Valley shopping center in Moraga later this year after Graze closes sometime in June. Check out the Rockridge lunch menu here, and Emeryville Provisions menu here. I’ve been to their Rockridge spot several times which was amazing and apparently the chicken wings in Emeryville are the best so I hope they will offer that in Moraga as well.

Why Moraga of all places? According to the Graze owner the Noodle Theory owners live in Moraga so thankfully locals won’t need to head for Lafayette, Walnut Creek and beyond for top-tier cuisine anymore.
