Not sure how long it’ll last but this window display is on the outside. Props to Venture men’s goods in Lafayette for the creativity.

Back last February I noted the impending demolition of the dilapidated building at the corner of N. Broadway and Cypress in downtown Walnut Creek to be replaced with a new building to house a bridal salon and office space on the second floor and as you can see the building is now gone.
La Soie Bridal Salon, with locations in southern California and Sacramento will eventually open at this new Walnut Creek location. A couple of weeks ago I noted the opening of Flares Bridal in Broadway Plaza so there will be plenty of choices for brides-to-be. Take a look at the La Soie Bridal website to see how nice it looks.
A couple of weeks ago I noted that the Danville Chocolates and Alicia Klein kiosks closed at the Liberty Bell Plaza in downtown Walnut Creek and now a kiosk has opened up just in time for the Superbowl. Called Team Shop, it currently offers autographed football memorabilia and will also have 49ers jerseys and hats on hand. As baseball season nears they will also offer baseball memorabilia and gear so check them out before you watch the big game on Sunday!
Not much surprise as it’s a seasonal store but Go! Calendars & Toys is closing by February 1st in the former Build-A-Bear location in Broadway Plaza in downtown Walnut Creek. It looks like there are some good deals on calendars and toys so drop by to see what’s available before they close up shop (for now).
Last week I noted that Canvas and Cabernet, the paint and sip studio would be opening over the weekend in downtown Walnut Creek on Locust St. It turns out that was a bit premature but they are planning for a February 2nd opening. In the meantime I was able to get a sneak preview inside. As you can see from the photo above one wall will be decorated with various art pieces done at the studio. Note that this is just a preview, more work is being done on the interior before it opens next week.

Check out the pendant lighting from Neiman Marcus as well as the wood stained bar area:
In addition to alcoholic drinks there will be deliveries made from Harvest Market around the corner and another part of the store will have vintage goods for sale. A children’s area will be in a separate section where kids can create their own paintings.
I look forward to checking out how this looks when they open. Canvas and Cabernet is located at 1421 Locust St. in downtown Walnut Creek, across the street from the Walnut Creek Yacht Club.
Back last February I noted that the tennis and golf shop Golfsmith was moving to Pleasant Hill and now this huge building on Mt. Diablo in Walnut Creek will be home to Pier 1 Imports who are moving down from a block away also on Mt. Diablo Blvd. As you drive around town you may notice people standing around with huge 20-40% off signs in order to get rid of inventory from the other store.
This is a smart move by Pier 1 as I don’t think I ever actually went to their current location. Despite being a stone’s throw away from downtown it seemed really isolated. The new location is huge and should be a lot more visible to downtown shoppers. Any fans of Pier 1? I rarely shop there but when I think of Pier 1 the first word that comes to mind is: wicker.
I’ve driven past Sugi, a small, family owned Japanese style gift and bedding store thousands of times and finally dropped by to check it out. They are located in downtown Lafayette on Moraga Road right next to La Fiesta Square.
From their website:
Sugi Fine Bedding & Gifts is a special place to shop for natural handcrafted bedding and futon, tatami platform bed frames, home decor, zen items, and specialty gifts from Japan and around the world. We’re conveniently located at La Fiesta Square in downtown Lafayette, California.
Check out the back of the store:
The front of the store has a wide selection of fabrics:
Sugi is located at 961 Moraga Rd in downtown Lafayette.
Ever since Starbucks bought Boulange Bakery the Moraga farmers market has been looking for an independent bakery to replace them and finally a new bakery is pitching its tent. The Panorama Baking Company from San Francisco will be selling bread and pastries from now on at the Moraga farmers market. They already sell at various farmers markets but this may be their first East Bay market location. I tried their roasted red pepper focaccia and it was quite good. I noticed they had types of bread that I had never seen before like “pear”. Any recommended bread to try out? I usually stick to olive.
Although Footcandy has closed up shop in Walnut Creek you can still get up to 80% off as their final inventory is being sold around the corner at the fashion boutique Norf London which I profiled way back in December of 2011.
Back in November I noted that the “paint and sip” shop Canvas and Cabernet would be opening in downtown Walnut Creek across the street from Pyramid Alehouse and I recently found out they will be having a soft opening this Saturday, January 26th. Check out this month’s calendar here. According to their FAQ, classes begin at 6:30pm and last 2 hours or so. Prices range from $25 – $45 and provide canvases, paint brushes, easels and aprons. As for the drinks, “A variety of beer, wine and champagne are available for purchase. Beer is $5-$8 a bottle. We have wine by the glass for $9 or a variety of wines by the bottle Champagne and Mimosas are also a favorite at $5 a glass!”
