3:00pm | $24While many music lovers in the West know the names Rachmaninoff, Tchaikovsky and Mussorgsky, Russia’s composers of the 17th and 18th centuries — Berezovsky, Titov and Bortniansky, to name just three — are far less known. Their music reflects both the emerging influence of Russia’s new contact with Western Europe under Peter the Great, and the rich traditions of Russia’s ancient musical heritage. The interweaving of these two influences in Russia during this period created a uniquely beautiful musical literature still largely unknown in the West.
Highlights of our concert will include a suite of 18th century Kanty (songs celebrating Peter the Great), compositions by Bortniansky and Sarti, a beautiful choral concerto by Berezovsky (“Do Not Forsake Me in My Old Age”), Titov’s great Christmas chant and hymn to the Virgin Mary, and the rollicking finale from the first Russian opera, Fomin’s “Coachmen at the Relay Station.” Five pieces will be American premieres!It has been said, even by knowledgeable people, that there is no Baroque-style music in the Russian repertoire. This is not so, and Slavyanka will prove it with both male-only and mixed-choir renditions. Not only is there a Russian Baroque, but it is beautiful! Come and join us for this special musical event!
