Thanks to a reader for sending word that Everything But Water, which opened almost four years ago in downtown Walnut Creek, is no longer listed on the Broadway Plaza directory. It’s not listed on the company store locator either, so considering it’s empty inside, it looks like this is permanently closed. Considering how many stores haven’t opened yet and are even boarded up, it’s difficult to determine whether a store is actually closed these days.

Bright, new art murals made by local artists and Neiman Marcus employees are on display at the Neiman Marcus store in downtown Walnut Creek that was recently looted during recent protests according to this KCBS Radio article.

Only a couple of weeks ago the Apple store at Broadway Plaza in downtown Walnut Creek was boarded up with few people to be seen. As I checked out the area this week, I was amazed by the huge lines on both sides of the Apple store with temperature checks being done and mandatory mask wearing while in line. I guess people really love their Apple gear!

“The Future is Bright”
—J.Crew
Is the future really bright for private equity-owned J.Crew, the clothing store who declared bankruptcy last week? I don’t know, let’s ask other private equity owned stores like Toys “R” Us, Sports Authority, and Gymboree.

It was rather eerie strolling through Broadway Plaza in downtown Walnut Creek over the weekend during prime shopping hours as stores were closed with the exception of Boudin Bakery for pick-up and almost nobody around except for the occasional dog walker. Oddly, the same pop music was piping through speakers as if nothing had changed.

Not the greatest timing for a new store but SoCal-based men’s clothing store TravisMathew opened over the weekend at Broadway Plaza in Walnut Creek. Interestingly there is a tabletop video game (Pac-Man I think), which you can see in the photo below at left. Too bad nobody can go out to see it. Since parts of SoCal are shutting down as well it’ll be a while before online orders are delivered but you can check out their online selection here.
From their website:
Due to the Orange County Ordinance issued on March 17th regarding COVID-19 requiring businesses to temporarily shut down, the TravisMathew office and warehouse will be closed until end of day March 31st at the earliest. Unfortunately, orders will see a delay in shipment until at least this date. Thank you and be safe!
