I spotted this lone vending machine at Broadway Plaza in Walnut Creek between See’s Candies and Lucky Brand jeans. Not as ornate as this one but I bet it’ll be quite popular this summer.

Broadway Plaza, Walnut Creek
Compared to the last time we took a look at the Broadway Plaza redevelopment in downtown Walnut Creek back last November, there has been amazing progress. You can see where the windows will be, one new parking garage has been completed, and Macy’s new window is up. Check out the latest progress here. I’m looking forward to the grand opening towards the end of the year!

A new “gateway feature” rest area is planned for Broadway Plaza at the corner of Newell Ave. and S. Broadway in Walnut Creek where the new parking garage is being built. This is directly across from Whole Foods and looks like it will be a nice area to take a break.

The Broadway Plaza beauty supply store Sephora is expanding slightly on one side as the outside undergoes a facelift but they are still open.

For those following progress on the giant window that has been added to Macy’s during the Broadway Plaza renovation, the giant Believe poster has finally been removed to reveal the window. Interestingly, based on the previously featured rendering, it looks like only nine panes will be transparent.

Thanks to a reader for pointing out this SF Business Times article that mentioned Boca Pizzeria is planning on opening a third location in Broadway Plaza in Walnut Creek after the renovation is completed. Check out Boca’s lunch/dinner menu here. This will bring the total pizza restaurants near the Broadway Plaza area to three along with soon-to-open Project Pie and California Pizza Kitchen. Nice to see some new pizza options over there!
From their website:
Boca Pizzeria is an Italian inspired Pizzeria utilizing the abundance of Northern California’s seasonal ingredients, while showcasing local micro breweries and wine country’s boutique varietals. Boca Pizzeria has always been our little neighborhood gem we had in mind for years, where we can dine with our friends, family and loved ones.
Our pizzas are authentic Neapolitan style, which cooks for no more than 2 minutes in a 900 degree Italian wood burning oven, is made from double milled 00 Caputo flour. Our sauce is made of the finest San Marzano tomatoes imported from Italy. We make house-made mozzarella cheese daily.

The luxury destination club Inspirato opened just last August in Broadway Plaza across from the Tesla Showroom and they have now closed.
Over the weekend Broadway Plaza posted signs in the fountain area with their Code of Conduct. Those who “refuse to comply with the Code will be asked to leave”. One point stuck out to me as a parent of a young child. Skipping is banned in Broadway Plaza. When my kid is in a good mood, he is incapable of not skipping, so I worry. If I notice him skipping while we stroll through the Plaza, should I say to him, “junior, you’re going to have to cut out the skipping; that’s against the rules, buddy.” Or should I risk getting kicked out as he merrily skips and hops about? Oh, the humanity! 🙂

Check out the latest progress on Macy’s in Broadway Plaza in downtown Walnut Creek. Compare to the reddish tiles on the old Macy’s. Which style and coloring do you like more? Note that the Believe sign is actually hiding glass paneling which is going to thankfully allow plenty of natural light inside.
The 57,000 square foot side expansion:
With the holiday season having finished the Macy’s parking garage in Broadway Plaza in downtown Walnut creek is now closed due to the massive redevelopment going on. The new multi-level parking garage next to Nordstrom opened last month and there is complementary valet parking as well but I wonder how this will affect the parking situation in downtown Walnut Creek. I may have to scout out more free street parking further away.
