Moraga Political Campaigning gets Nasty

I was driving around Moraga recently and noticed that every sign for Karen Mendonca, who is running for reelection for the Moraga Town Council is accompanied by a “Dump Mendonica” sign. Someone must really have it out for her given the amount of time and money they spent. Does anyone find this uncalled for or is negative campaigning expected these days?

Karen Mendonca was elected to the Moraga Town Council in November 2008. She served as Vice Mayor in 2010 and the Mayor of the Town of Moraga for 2011. Karen represents the Town of Moraga as its delegate to the League of California Cities (LOCC) and to the Contra Costa County Mayors’ Conference. She is Moraga’s liaison to the Association of Bay Area Governments (ABAG).

New Logo for Beyond the Creek

I’ve been meaning to update this site’s logo for a while now and finally found a great designer to update it. Interestingly, he was able to reuse the three swirls from the original logo:

Joaquin Moraga Intermediate School Student Reports Suspicious Person

From the Moraga School District:

The Moraga Police Department provided updated vehicle information regarding the Community Alert message sent yesterday, September 19, 2012. The JM student who saw the vehicle yesterday saw the same vehicle again today at approximately 2:30 PM. The vehicle is described as a brown or gold SUV (not a pickup as previously reported), dirty (dusty and possible not maintained) with the rear window either rolled down or broken. If you have any information about this incident, referred to as Moraga Police Department Case Number 12-875, contact the Moraga Police Department at (925) 284-5010.

The September 19, 2012 Community Alert follows:

This afternoon at approximately 3:30 PM, a Joaquin Moraga Intermediate School student reported a suspicious person to the Moraga Police Department. The student reported a suspicious person asked if he wanted a ride after school dismissal today. The student answered “No” and walked away. The suspicious person was described as a college-aged male, thin to average in build and had a short buzz-cut hair style. The vehicle, parked across the street from JMIS on Camino Pablo Drive, was described as a brown, pick-up truck with a flat camper shell and possibly 4-doors. If you have any information about this incident, referred to as Moraga Police Department Case Number 12-875, contact the Moraga Police Department at (925) 284-5010.

Las Lomas High School Student Found in Concord

From a Walnut Creek Police Department press release:

On Tuesday September 11, 2012 at approx, 4 PM detectives from Walnut Creek PD reacting to a tip provided to Concord PD located missing juvenile Larissa Huntsman at a residence in Concord.
Walnut Creek PD detectives have been searching for Huntsman since she was last seen on 8/24/12 leaving Las Lomas High School.
The investigation determined that Huntsman was voluntarily missing, with the knowledge and assistance of her biological, non-custodial mother, Laura Huntsman. Larissa was in hiding at the Concord residence.
This case will be referred to the Contra Costa County District Attorney’s Office for the possibility of criminal charges being filed against Laura Huntsman.

Beware Walnut Creek Farmers Market Target Car Parkers – You Have Been Warned (Again)

Back last November I noted that Target was cracking down on people parking at Target only to head to the farmers market on Saturday. Well, apparently back then Target was seeing sales receipts growth so they really didn’t care that much, but word on the street is that they have seen a precipitous drop in sales receipts coinciding with the farmers market time slot and they believe this is due to lack of parking so now they are getting serious.

Apparently they have lookouts watching as people exit their cars and if they catch you as you head towards the farmers market instead of Target, you may get slapped with a ticket. As the sign states, you need to leave a receipt on your dashboard to prove you have been to Target. Your best bet is to park at the Growers Square parking garage as can be seen in the next photo. It’s free on Sundays which is news to me.

CHP Officer Not Expected to Survive

Reports about the CHP officer who was shot this morning during a traffic stop indicate he is critically wounded at John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek. Word on the street from people who would know indicate he’s on life support and is not expected to make it. Thoughts and prayers go out to the officer and his family. I hope this turns out not to be true and he pulls through.
